Well, I can see deodorant being justified because much of the smells are due to bacteria and whatnot that grow on moist parts of the body.

I suspect that the particular bacteria are different than they were however long ago, and that people's preferred "B.O. smells" aren't the same due to extensive gene mixing since that time.

Also, there was a significant chunk of time, I think from the middle ages into the 1700's, where people wore deodorant INSTEAD of bathing, as it was believed bathing made one weak. Certainly today is an improvement over that, as proper hygiene has the added benefit of increasing personal health as well as making oneself more pleasant to be around from an odor standpoint.

However, I detest the use of makeup. Far too many people are convinced they don't look good as themselves and need to plaster some artificial substances on their faces before going out in public... or even around their own homes. This really drives me nuts. Especially when a really cute girl hits a certain age and decides she needs to use that junk, and then proceeds to apply it totally incompetently. Actually, sometimes this ends up being so comical that it's cute. But most of the time it's like... sheesh Sweetie, I want to see YOU, not what the media has convinced you that you should look like...
