'PING'?

I have seen this quite a bit on here, but I have no idea what it means? The only pinging I know about either involves IP addresses, or has to do with ping-pong.

I'm guessing it has to do with neither of those, so could someone clear that up for me?

Also, it didn't take long for me to realize that "nt" meant that there is only a title in a post, and no message. But what does the "nt" stand for?

Sorry for the newb questions. :P
