The usage of "lolita" (and derivatives such as loli) as a common noun for an underage girl couldn't have been predicted by Nabokov, and is not the point of the novel (if, indeed, it has a point: like Furcifer also said, art can just be art). The novel itself uses "nymphette" for "lolita", as anyone who has ever read it knows… For all the neologist uses of "lolita" (sometimes kept capitalized, at that, "Lolita"), it makes no sense to attribute them to a book they have surpassed in spread of awareness, anymore than "Jeezuz!" as an exclamation can be attributed to the Bible. |
